Consultants Tasks

Undertaken Across The World

CSG Demining Consultants has a wealth of experience in providing a variety of consultancy services to a range of clients in a diversity of locations. Some very brief case-studies will serve to highlight the services it has provided:

CASE STUDY 1: ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN AFGHANISTAN

In September 2003, CSG Demining Consultants was engaged to provide demining advice and management to a World Bank-funded project to rehabilitate 175km of main road in the north of Afghanistan.

The company immediately deployed a consultant to determine the scope and scale of the landmine and UXO contamination problem in the project area, to identify the demining agencies available and capable of completing the necessary demining in the required timeframe, to develop appropriate Statements of Work, to call for and evaluate tenders for the demining and to develop and establish suitable demining Contracts.

The task took considerable skill in liaising with the Afghan Government, the World Bank, the Project Management organisation, the United Nations, the road construction contractors, the demining contractors and the independent demining Quality Assurance contractor. However, CSG Demining Consultants had the knowledge, ability and experience to develop and implement solutions that satisfied all their needs while meeting the time, cost and quality requirements of the project.

The success of this consultancy was such that CSG Demining Consultants was requested to deploy a full-time Demining Manager to the project and has recently been engaged to provide the same services to another major road project in Afghanistan.

CASE STUDY 2: EVALUATIONS IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA

In early 2003, CSG Demining Consultants was engaged by the Australian Government Aid Agency, AusAID, to evaluate an aid programme being conducted in Vietnam. As part of the evaluation, the company undertook a thorough investigation and review of the demining objectives, their relationship to the Community Assistance objectives, the structure and contractual arrangements for the demining, the training plan and content for local deminers, the Quality Assurance and operational monitoring systems and the general financial data. CSG Demining Consultants was also requested to develop an external monitoring and evaluation plan and has been retained to conduct a mid-programme evaluation in early 2004.

The evaluation of the Vietnam programme follows-on from similar evaluations CSG Demining Consultants has conducted in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos for AusAID and other aid agencies.

CASE STUDY 3: ASSESSMENT AND DESIGN IN SRI LANKA

CSG Demining Consultants has been, and continues to be, involved in three significant projects in Sri Lanka over the past 3 years.

The first project saw CSG Demining Consultants engaged by the United Nations in late 2001 to conduct a detailed and comprehensive Situational Analysis, Needs Assessment and Project Design to allow them to establish a demining capacity and capability in the former Conflict Areas of the country.

For the second project, Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation engaged CSG Demining Consultants to undertake a Situational Analysis, Needs Assessment and Project Design and to establish necessary contracts to support an Asian Development Bank-funded project to rehabilitate the A9, major highway running through the former Conflict Area in the north of the country.

Following the success of CSG Demining Consultants input in the A9 project, Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation has again engaged the company to provide similar consultancy support to another major project to rehabilitate 800km of roads in the north of the country.

CASE STUDY 4: SEISMIC SURVEY IN IRAN

In 2002/2003 CSG Demining Consultants was engaged by Terras Persia Seismic company to assist them in their development of a 2-D seismic survey programme on the Iran-Iraq border. The services provided by CSG Demining Consultants included Analysis, Needs Assessment, Project Design, the identification and assessment of suitable demining organisations and liaison with TPS' client and main security agencies.

CASE STUDY 5: REMEDIATION OF FORMER MILITARY RANGES IN AUSTRALIA

In early 2002, URS Environmental Consultants called on CSG Demining Consultants to assist them in the remediation of several former military areas in Sydney that had been identified for release for civilian housing. The company assisted by conducting a Hazard Assessment and Site Survey, identifying potential UXO Clearance contractors, developing and evaluating tenders from the contractors and exercising Quality and general monitoring and management of the technical aspects of the projects.

CSG Demining Consultants continues to assist URS.

CASE STUDY 6: DEMINING IN TAIWAN

In 1999, CSG Demining Consultants provided a demining Project Manager to assist Specialist Gurkha Services UK with the management of a project to clear minefields and mine dumps from the island of Kinmen. The project was such a success that it was completed 40% ahead of schedule and significantly under budget.

'Quantitative UXO Risk Assessment'

CSG has developed a Model that calculates the quantified probability of UXO of a particular type being present in a given area.  Unlike other models, the CSG Model provides companies and organisations with an objective 'real' figure they can readily relate to their own particular level of Risk Adversity and allows them to tailor the UXO remediation undertaken within specific components of their project area.
